UPDATED VISIT: SUNDAY 31st JANUARY 2016
I recently visited Tom Browns again and increased my vote to 4 as I felt the service was better this time around. On arrival we were shown to our table and the food and drinks menu came quickly, which gave us plenty of time to decide on what to have. We were able to have 3 courses from the early bird menu, which worked out at great value.
I decided to have the famous crispy egg to start which comes with sausage, chutney, mushroom and pancetta. I found it tasting very nice with a good mix of flavours, the egg was runny but I think id have preferred mine a little more runny. For main I thought id try something that I have never had before and that was the pheasant, it was very nice and full of flavour (something I will certainly eat again!!) Finally for dessert I had the sticky Toffee Pudding which to me was an interesting one as it was not too stodgy and light but I prefer my toffee pudding to be hot as I love that hot taste in your throat with the cold ice cream but all in all it was nice.
The service was also very good and quick to bring everything we asked for and all staff were very friendly and polite, would fully recommend anyone to visit! 🙂
I have been to Tom Browns Brasserie in Gunthorpe a number of times and really enjoyed it. This restaurant could easily have gotten a rating of 4, however the last time I went I was not as impressed with the service as I have come to expect.
We did ask the server for water which didn’t come until we were on our main. We also noticed that service was slow which was mentioned by a couple other diners, I wouldn’t let this put you off though as the food is incredible. I think it was just an issue on that day as like I said other times I have been it was excellent!
I always like the fact that when you enter you are seated at the bar area so you can have a drink whilst they prepare your table. They will provide you with menus, allowing you to select what you want to eat before going to your table.
Tom Browns Brasserie is nicely decorated with a number of areas to be able to eat in, I also like the fact that tables are not too close together so you can have a private conversation and not feel like your being over heard.
What’s The Location Like?
Visually the location is nice, you are right on the river side so after your meal you could have a nice stroll. There is a couple of places near by if you wanted a drink somewhere else but apart from that there is little else in the terms of bars etc.
If you are looking for a nice restaurant, without having to worry about a busy city night out then its perfect! They do in fact to a early bird menu in the week, which is perfect if you fancy a nice meal out mid week after work.
What Did I have?
I have been a few times and tried different things, however I am going to base this on what I had on my last visit.
Starter – Wood Pigeon – £8.50
I have only had pigeon once before and really enjoyed it, seeing it on the menu I thought id give it a go. It came with smoked bacon, parsnip crisps and a balsamic glaze, which I personally love. The sizing was perfect and tasted very nice!
Main – Duck Breast – £18.50
The duck was cooked perfectly and tasted very nice. It came with kale which always fits well with duck and a celeriac& potato rosti. It also came with a raspberry jus which I have never had with duck and must admit thought it was a great combination of flavours. Something I have tried to do since when cooking duck.
We didn’t have a desert as it was mid week and getting late.
What Was The Service Like?
As mentioned at the start of the review, this visit the service was fairly poor. We did get welcomed nicely and seated at the bar, our orders were taken in a timely manor. It took a long time for our water to arrive and the gap between starter and main was too long.
The staff were however very friendly and apologetic and id just reiterate that previous visits the service has been spot on.
Final Foodie Thought
Tom Browns Brasserie in Gunthorpe is an excellent restaurant if you are looking for great looking and tasting food. The service is usually excellent and the staff are very friendly. The outside area is perfect in the summer with plenty of places to sit, drink and watch the world go by.
If you are looking for a nice restaurant thats not in the city then you cannot go wrong with this one. Its worth taking a look at their events as they do have some excellent things coming up including, regular offers, Wine tasting, Italian night and live music.
