What Is Breakfast?

Breakfast is typically the first meal of the day and is what breaks the nights fasting period. There are many different types of breakfasts and what you have would depend on how much time you have. It is common for people to have a quicker breakfast during the week or even skipping it completely due to work commitments.

Many countries will have a typical or traditional breakfast, that is often eaten on weekends or when on holiday. For the UK this is the full English, although granola and smoothies are becoming just as popular due their ease, healthiness and quickness.

What Are The Benefits Of Breakfast?

You have no doubt heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but is that even true? There is a lot of conflicting information! I do believe that it is very important but I’d say that every meal is important (either that or I just love my food too much!)

Below are some of the benefits;

Get Your 5-A-Day

No doubt everyone knows now that you should get 5 portions of fruit and 5 portions of vegetables per day. Vegetables is not to hard as these can be easily added into lunch and dinner.

Breakfast can be an excellent time to get additional fruit, whether you decide to have a fruit smoothie, a fresh fruit drink or even chop some fruit onto your morning porridge.

Rehydrate Your Body

For a healthy body we need plenty of water, many people believe they are hungry when in actual fact they need a drink. Being hydrated is very important for our health and if you don’t get enough you can find yourself with a headache. It has also been linked to tiredness and grumpiness.

Including a drink with your breakfast is a great way to rehydrate your body, ready to face the day. Many people will have a morning coffee which is fine but does not hydrate you as well, instead i’d recommend a glass of water or fruit juice.

Getting Breakfast Into Your Diet

As already mentioned, many people struggle to find time to have a breakfast and this can result in this meal being skipped. The best way of getting it into your daily routine is to plan exactly what you are having and know how much time you have to prepare it.

You don’t need breakfast as soon as you wake up but ideally within a couple of hours. If you therefore go to work early, you could have breakfast once you have gotten to work or grab a quick breakfast that can be eaten on the way to work (IE a Smoothie)
